In the last few years, Varun Tej has struggled badly at the box office. Ghani, Gandeevadhari Arjuna, Operation Valentine, and Matka all ended up as box office washouts. He now heads into Korean Kanakaraju carrying the baggage of back-to-back disasters.
That makes this film extremely important for his career.
The good thing is that the team has started promotions well in advance. The recently released mass song has generated some attention, and director Merlapaka Gandhi has been speaking confidently about the film. While horror-comedies are no longer new, the Korean backdrop gives the film a fresh hook that could work if executed well.
The film also faces competition. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s acting debut, DC, is releasing on the same day and comes with attractions like an intense storyline and Anirudh’s music. Telugu films KZQ and Sumanth’s Newton’s Third Law are also hitting theatres. While none of them may be unbeatable opponents individually, they will divide audience attention.
Varun Tej’s situation has also changed significantly. There was a time when his films were mounted on a bigger scale with top directors, leading technicians, and star heroines. After a series of failures, his market has inevitably shrunk. Korean Kanakaraju has been made on a relatively controlled budget with Merlapaka Gandhi, who is also looking for a comeback, while the overall pre-release buzz remains low.
However, the industry has become increasingly unpredictable. Peddi, despite massive expectations, largely underperformed. Lenin, which many doubted before its release, turned into Akhil Akkineni’s biggest hit. Samantha surprised everyone by delivering a Rs. 100-crore blockbuster with Maa Inti Bangaaram. Recent box office results have shown that hype alone guarantees nothing.
If the promotions gain momentum over the next few days and the film receives positive word of mouth, Korean Kanakaraju has every chance of surprising everyone. More than just another release, it has the potential to end Varun Tej’s flop streak and put his career back on track.
