Vishwak Sen’s Legacy: More Borrowed Than Original?

Vishwak Sen in Legacy teaser

Vishwak Sen has taken a completely different route with his latest film, Legacy. Without much publicity or hype, the team quietly wrapped up the first shooting schedule, and the teaser was officially released yesterday as a New Year special. The film marks the second directorial venture of Saikiran Daida, who earlier made his debut with the horror film Pindam, which was a flop.

After suffering an embarrassing disaster last year with Laila, Vishwak Sen went through a difficult phase. He stayed away from public appearances and focused entirely on his work. During this period, he committed to two projects, Funky and Legacy. While Funky is gearing up for a February release, Legacy is also expected to arrive in theatres later this year.

After watching the announcement video of Legacy, some viewers feel that the director appears heavily influenced by the kind of cinema associated with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, which relies on shock value rather than organic storytelling. While this approach has worked for Vanga and built a cult following for him among the audience, it is not everyone’s cup of tea. Many films that try to replicate this style end up feeling borrowed and not built on original ideas. In Legacy, the making shown in the teaser has also raised concerns about low production quality. That said, it is still only an announcement video, and it would be premature to pass any kind of judgment before more promotional material is released. There is ample time for the makers to work on the feedback and make necessary changes.

Vishwak Sen has been attempting to break away from routine cinema for quite some time. Films like Gangs of Godavari and Gaami reflected his experimental mindset, though they did not achieve the expected success. This time, he believes that strong content will speak louder than image. With Legacy, he is aiming for a big comeback. Now, it remains to be seen what kind of impact this “bold” political drama will make at the box office.
