SS Rajamouli is planning something much bigger with Varanasi. The director has revealed that the Mahesh Babu starrer is five to six times bigger than RRR in scale. Interestingly, despite the film’s massive scale, he has managed to complete its shoot in fewer days than his previous film.
Speaking at the 50th Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, Rajamouli revealed that RRR took 315 days to shoot, while Varanasi is being completed in 275 days. That is around 40 fewer shooting days for a film he describes as five to six times bigger.
The experience of making RRR and better planning appear to have helped Rajamouli manage the production more efficiently this time. The director seems to have learnt valuable lessons from his previous projects and is putting that experience to use on a much larger canvas.
Varanasi features Mahesh Babu takes the story across different locations, including Varanasi, Antarctica and Africa, with Rajamouli attempting to bring a much bigger story to the screen.
With RRR, Rajamouli made a strong impact internationally. Now, he is attempting something on a much bigger scale with Varanasi. How the film turns out and whether it matches expectations will be interesting to see. Varanasi is set to release worldwide on April 7, 2027.
