The Paradise USA premiere advances crossed the $1 million mark, and Nani has now equaled Mahesh Babu’s record of 12 films crossing the $1 million mark in the US market.
Mahesh Babu has been one of the biggest names in that market for years, and Nani now matching his tally shows how far his overseas pull has grown.
The wider list also shows how much the US market has expanded for Telugu stars. NTR and Pawan Kalyan have 9 $1M films each, followed by Prabhas with 8. Allu Arjun and Balakrishna have 6 each, while Chiranjeevi, Vijay Deverakonda and Ram Charan have 5 apiece. Several other Telugu stars have also entered the $1M club.
But there is an important catch. $1 million is no longer the benchmark it once was a decade ago.
The North American market has changed dramatically. Ticket prices have increased, Telugu films are getting much wider releases, and the overseas audience has grown along with the scale of big Indian films. As a result, crossing $1 million is now achievable for a much larger number of films and stars.
The real benchmark at the top end has moved much higher. $3 million for Tier-2 Tollywood stars and $5 million for Tier-1 stars has increasingly become the new $1 million. The real test is whether a star can consistently deliver $3M and $5M-plus films in North America.
That requires more than star power. The film needs strong content, a big opening and sustained word of mouth. A big film can open strongly, but reaching $5 million requires audiences to keep coming throughout the weekend and beyond.
For Nani, The Paradise crossing $1 million in advances is another major step in his overseas growth. But the more interesting question now is whether he can take the next leap.
