For the past few years, repeated postponements have become a common feature of big-budget pan-India films. Projects starring Prabhas, Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, and other Tier-1 stars have frequently missed their original release dates because of their massive scale and lengthy production schedules.
Now, the same trend is spreading to films headlined by non-Tier-1 actors as well.
Several much-awaited Telugu films are currently in limbo, with no clarity on when they will reach theatres. Nani’s The Paradise is yet to lock a new release date after being postponed. Vijay Deverakonda’s Rana Baali is also waiting for a revised release date. Naga Chaitanya’s Vrushakarma, Sai Durga Tej’s SYG, Adivi Sesh’s Goodachari 2, and Nikhil’s Swayambhu are all progressing without official release dates.
What’s surprising is that many of these films have already exceeded their originally planned production schedules. Yet, the makers are still unwilling to commit to a release date.
One of the biggest reasons is the changing OTT market.
According to trade sources, some of these films are yet to finalize their OTT deals. Without those agreements in place, producers are hesitant to announce a theatrical release date, as digital rights have become crucial for recovering a major part of a film’s investment.
The situation is equally challenging for films that have already signed OTT deals.
Industry insiders say several OTT platforms are now insisting on a firm theatrical release window. Frequent postponements affect their own content planning, and some platforms are warning producers that repeated delays could lead to digital deals being renegotiated at lower values. With OTT valuations already under pressure, producers can hardly afford another reduction. At the same time, many of these films are still not ready for release, leaving the makers in a difficult position.
Pan-India filmmaking itself has also become far more complicated. Multi-language releases, elaborate action sequences, extensive VFX work, and the challenge of coordinating multiple actors’ schedules are stretching production timelines across the board. Even films that are nowhere near the scale of Pushpa or RRR are taking much longer than they did a few years ago.
The downside is obvious. Long gaps between announcements and release dates reduce momentum, increase production costs, and create uncertainty among distributors, exhibitors, and audiences alike.
What was once a problem limited to Tier-1 stars has now become an industry-wide issue.
