Ever since Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana trailer dropped, social media has turned into a battlefield. While the trailer has been praised for its scale and ambition, it has also faced backlash over portions of the VFX, CGI, Ranbir Kapoor‘s Lord Rama, and Sai Pallavi’s Sita.
But something else has started happening. Out of nowhere, Adipurush has begun trending again.
Old clips of Prabhas as Rama are suddenly flooding X, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Memes mocking the film’s VFX, dialogues, and performances are everywhere, almost as if Adipurush has just been released. The timing has made many people suspicious.
A section of social media users believes this isn’t organic. According to them, the easiest way to make Ramayana look like a masterpiece is to keep comparing it with Adipurush, one of the worst mythological films ever made.
Let’s be clear.
Adipurush deserved every bit of hate it received in 2023. Its VFX looked cartoonish. The dialogues became a national joke. The writing was disastrous. Prabhas looked pathetic as Lord Rama. The film was rightly rejected by audiences across the country.
But why is everyone suddenly obsessed with Adipurush again?
If Ramayana is genuinely as extraordinary as its makers claim, why does it need Adipurush as its measuring stick? A film aspiring to become the definitive cinematic adaptation of the Ramayana should be competing with the greatest films ever made, not constantly reminding audiences that it is better than Adipurush. That is hardly an achievement. It is the bare minimum.
Some users also feel that repeatedly dragging Prabhas into the conversation indirectly benefits Ranbir Kapoor. If audiences keep revisiting Prabhas’ widely trolled performance, Ranbir automatically appears better by comparison.
The irony is that Ramayana shouldn’t need any of this. With a reported Rs. 4000 crore budget, world-class technicians, and a stellar cast, the film should stand on its own merits.
Until audiences watch the film, the sudden re-emergence of Adipurush trolls feels more like an attempt to control the narrative before the real box office verdict arrives.
