Suriya’s Scene is doing decent business in North America, but it needs a sustained run to reach the breakeven mark of $1.7 million, according to trade experts.
After the huge business of Vishwanath and Sons, the film has managed to get a fair start. Its premiere and Day 1 collections stand at around $546K. The premieres contributed $212K, while Friday (Day 1) added another $334K. Out of the $546K total, the Tamil version contributed $430K, while the Telugu version added $116K.
These are not huge numbers, but they are not disappointing either. A section of the audience has appreciated the film, and that could help it improve its collections over the weekend. However, the big question is whether this limited positive response can translate into the kind of box-office run needed to reach hit status.
The breakeven target is quite high. The film needs a big jump on Saturday, around $600K, to be in the race. Sunday also needs to be strong. However, the bookings are not on that level as of now.
Scene will need to hold well during the weekdays and then post another strong second weekend to get closer to its $1.7 million breakeven target.
For now, the opening has given the film a promising start, but the real test begins over the next few days.
