Tollywood is leading all of Indian cinema when it comes to sheer box office pull. Be it openings, long run in other markets, or overseas openings, Tollywood has it all. But there is one major thing that the industry has been missing and it is “unanimous positive” talk.

It has been a long long time since a Tollywood biggie opened to unanimously positive reviews and word of mouth.

Notable recent biggies including Salaar, Guntur Kaaram, Kalki and Devara. Strangely not a single one of them opened to unanimous reviews. Barring Guntur Kaaram (mediocre run) all other mentioned films made money but they could well have gone further with a better word of mouth.

Notably, even RRR itself opened to mixed reviews on opening day, before it could eventually blast through at the box office with star power.

Perhaps, the last best Telugu superstar film that opened unanimously is Rangasthalam.

Since the onset of the pan-Indian trends, the productions have scaled up, and the emotional writing has taken new streams. The shift in paradigm is perhaps taking a bit of time for Tollywood to process.
