Yash’s Toxic has found itself in a fresh controversy after YouTuber Suraj Kumar revealed that he received a legal notice from the film’s team over his review.
The notice was issued by Aiplex Software on behalf of KVN Monster Mind Creations LLP, which has described itself as the producer and copyright owner of the film. It reportedly identifies the YouTuber’s review as the content in question and refers to a Bengaluru court’s interim order concerning Toxic.
The legal development comes just days after the Bengaluru court granted an ex-parte temporary injunction in a case filed by KVN Productions LLP. The order restricts the publication, circulation, sharing or streaming of content described as false, malicious, defamatory or derogatory concerning Toxic. The order currently remains in force until September 28.
However, there is an important distinction. The court order does not specifically prohibit negative reviews or genuine criticism of the film. Reports examining the order have highlighted that point. In other words, expressing an unfavorable opinion about Toxic is not automatically the same as violating the injunction.
Suraj has shared the notice publicly, while his review video was still available online when the development was reported. The notice has now added another layer to the debate surrounding Toxic, which has already been receiving mixed reactions after its release.
The bigger question is where the line is drawn between legitimate film criticism and content the makers consider defamatory or misleading. That distinction could become more important when the matter comes up again before the Bengaluru court on September 28.
