
The Union Minister of State, Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary answering to a question in Lok Sabha revealed that Rs 7,75,242.02 crore is going to seven states that include UP, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh along with West Bengal, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Odisha.
This means 60% of Center’s tax revenue is going to these seven states. The lion’s share goes to UP with 18% followed by Bihar at 10%. The three states of UP, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are getting 36% between them.

The Central government gave out Rs 12,86,885.44 crore till 2024-25 March 10 for 28 states. Of this, 60% of the total share went to 7 states while the remaining 21 states got 40% share.
As for the southern states Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, they received Rs 2,03,237.38 crore in total which is 15.79% of the tax revenues.

When one considers the stats, the five states in aggregate got 11.92% less, which is Rs 27,527.24 crore, than the share got by UP alone.
Already, the chief ministers of southern states are complaining that they send more tax money than other states, while the northern states got major share in Center’s tax revenues. In this context, the latest data has gained significance almost ratifying the angst of southern states.
