158 Days Of Jail Already, Chevireddy Feels Deserted?

Chevireddy remand extended in liquor case

Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy is a senior YSR Congress leader from Chittoor district. He entered politics during YSR’s time and became a ZPTC at 27. He helped turn Chandragiri into a strong seat for the Congress and later for YSR Congress.

After Galla Aruna Kumari quit politics post-bifurcation and joined TDP, Jagan gave Chevireddy the Chandragiri ticket. He won in 2014 and 2019. In 2024, he moved to the Ongole Parliament seat while his son Mohith Reddy contested in Chandragiri. Both seats were lost badly.

In June this year, Chevireddy was arrested in a liquor scam. He is Accused No. 38 in a case involving irregularities in liquor sales and bribes between 2019 and 2024. SIT reports say he channelled ₹250–285 crore from key accused Raj Kasireddy to fund YSRCP’s 2024 campaign across six districts.

Investigators say the funds were also used to distribute cash and liquor for his Ongole contest and for Mohith Reddy’s Chandragiri campaign. He was arrested in June 2025 at Bengaluru airport while leaving for Colombo. He was remanded, and his family’s ₹68 crore properties now face attachment.

Chevireddy has been in jail for 158 days. The Vijayawada ACB Court recently extended his remand till December 5, adding two more weeks to his stay. Each time he appears in court, he breaks down before the media while claiming innocence, despite being ordered not to speak.

Jagan usually meets arrested party leaders, but he has not met Chevireddy even after 158 days. Rumours say Chevireddy is upset with the party’s legal support. He expected top Supreme Court lawyers for his bail, but the party has only been sending Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy, who has not secured relief.

Chevireddy now feels ignored and abandoned by the party he helped strengthen. His supporters say the lack of political and legal backing has left him completely isolated at a time when he expected strong support.
