The upcoming GHMC elections present a major opportunity for TDP and Janasena to expand their presence in Telangana. Recently, the Janasena Telangana Unit announced its decision to contest the elections, leaving the final call to Pawan Kalyan.
Janasena stated that it would decide later whether to contest independently or form an alliance with TDP and the BJP. However, within a day, Telangana BJP President Ramachandra Rao clarified that the BJP does not need an alliance and will contest the municipal elections alone.
This announcement came in the backdrop of controversial remarks made by Pawan Kalyan about Telangana. He stated that the coconut trees of Konaseema had fallen under the evil eye of the people of Telangana, triggering strong reactions.
Except for the BJP, almost all political parties in Telangana condemned Pawan Kalyan’s comments. Earlier too, he had spoken emotionally about the formation of Telangana, saying he spent over ten days without sleep or food.
Considering these statements and the political reaction, the BJP may have felt an alliance was unnecessary. If this position remains unchanged, it opens a clear path for TDP and Janasena to come together for the GHMC elections.
This election is especially important due to the significant influence of settlers in Greater Hyderabad. Even winning a limited number of GHMC seats could help both parties build momentum across other regions of Telangana.
Despite being in power in Andhra Pradesh, both TDP and Janasena have not focused much on strengthening their Telangana units. The GHMC elections offer a rare chance to re establish their political relevance in the state.
In the previous GHMC elections, Janasena initially planned to contest independently and even filed nominations in a few seats. Later, the BJP convinced Pawan Kalyan to withdraw and support BJP candidates instead.
If a similar situation unfolds again, it could create confusion and damage prospects for both TDP and Janasena. A clear and firm strategy is essential to avoid last minute reversals.
Janasena has so far contested only one major election in Telangana, the 2023 Assembly election. The party fought eight seats as part of an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party and failed to win any.
All Janasena candidates lost their deposits, including in Kukatpally, a settlers dominated constituency. TDP too has struggled in Telangana, making limited impact outside the Khammam district since bifurcation.
Whether Chandrababu Naidu and Pawan Kalyan can turn this opportunity into political gains in GHMC elections remains to be seen.
