Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy’s latest comments have once again brought attention to the YSR Congress Party’s leadership and the role of senior leaders around YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Sajjala said Jagan is the only leader in YSRCP and everyone else is a party worker. He also rejected the “Jagan No. 2, Sajjala No. 1” narrative and denied having any special control over access to Jagan.
The comments came during his public exchange with former YSRCP leader Vijayasai Reddy, who has accused Sajjala of having too much influence during the previous government. Sajjala has rejected those allegations.
The timing is what makes the statement interesting.
YSRCP is trying to rebuild after its 2024 election defeat, with local-body elections ahead. At a time when the party wants to show unity, the public exchange between two senior leaders has once again raised questions about what happened inside the party.
Sajjala’s message is simple. Jagan was always the main decision-maker in YSRCP.
But that raises another question. If Jagan was always the only leader, why has the question of who influenced him become such a big issue now?
There is also a question about responsibility for decisions taken during the previous government. If Jagan had the final say, what exactly was the role of the other senior leaders around him?
For YSRCP, however, the bigger task is rebuilding the organisation. The party will need strong leaders at the district level, an active second line and a strong presence on the ground.
Sajjala may have settled the leadership question with one sentence.
“Jagan is the only leader.”
The local elections will show whether the organisation around that leader is ready for the next political battle.
