First LGBTQ+ Woman Parliamentarian In India?

Menaka Guruswamy Rajya Sabha candidate

It will be history if it happens. She will be the first woman LGBTQ+ Parliamentarian in the history of modern India. The candidate is Menaka Guruswamy.

With Rajya Sabha elections coming up, from West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress has announced four names for its share of seats. One of them happens to be senior Supreme Court lawyer Menaka Guruswamy.

Menaka is famous for getting the Center to abolish the law criminalizing LGBTQ relationships under Article 377. Incidentally, Menaka Guruswamy is open about her own LGBTQ+ status.

There was a time when being LGBTQ+ meant public isolation and scrutiny. Today, with many societies accepting their choices, many have come out of the closet and subtly flaunt their preferences.

In fact, various Indian states have set aside jobs for transgenders to pull them out of the vicious cycle of poverty and in many cases prostitution.

If Menaka Guruswamy is elected, it would be a huge victory for the entire LGBTQ+ community and she will be a role model to those striving to deal with social ostracisation.
