Lokesh: Google Brings First Cable Landing to Vizag

Vizag Google data center project

Google has officially grounded one of the world’s largest data centers in Visakhapatnam. It is set to be India’s largest foreign investment in the data infrastructure space, giving a huge push to the city’s IT ecosystem.

Nara Lokesh, addressing the Google conclave, said that for the first time, Vizag will have a cable landing system. He explained how global data hubs from Virginia to Dublin are interconnected, and now Vizag will become part of that global network.

This project is expected to create around 200,000 direct and indirect jobs, marking a massive economic boost for the region.

Lokesh also revealed that the state did not follow the traditional MOU route with Google. In fact, there is no formal MOU even today. Instead, he highlighted that the government’s consistent follow-up, intent, and direct collaboration with Google played a key role in bringing the project to Vizag.

He further spoke about a fast-track governance model, where key stakeholders, including ministers, are directly connected with Google’s top leadership through a WhatsApp-based coordination system. Lokesh himself is part of this group, ensuring faster decision-making and execution.

He also reflected on the effort and coordination that went into grounding this mega project in Vizag.
