Car on a Train? Konkan’s Wild New Move

Kolad Goa car ferry

As Ganesh Chaturthi approaches, the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) is preparing to launch India’s first car ferry train, an innovative solution that allows private cars to travel by train between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa. This new service will allow passengers to travel alongside their vehicles, making long-distance travel easier and more comfortable.

Currently, driving from Mumbai or Pune to Goa can take between 20 to 22 hours due to heavy traffic and ghat road delays. The new car ferry train aims to cut that journey down to just 12 hours. This could be a game-changer during holidays and festival seasons, especially when traffic surges and families struggle to reunite in time.

The concept isn’t entirely new; similar wagons were earlier used for transporting trucks. Now, they have been modified to accommodate private vehicles. Each train will include 20 specially designed wagons, and each wagon can carry two cars, bringing the total capacity to 40 cars per trip. However, a minimum of 16 cars must be booked for the train to operate.

This service is expected to ease road congestion and offer a safer alternative to driving through difficult terrain. Apart from the time saved, travelers can avoid the physical fatigue of long road trips, and the reduced vehicle emissions also contribute to lower pollution.

By integrating passenger coaches with the car-carrying wagons, this service provides a smart travel alternative that combines comfort, efficiency, and safety. It’s especially useful during festival times like Ganesh Chaturthi but could benefit travelers throughout the year. With initiatives like this, India is moving toward smarter and greener transport options.
