
In a move coming as a surprise to many, the city of Indore has decided to punish anyone found to be giving alms to beggars in the city.
This new policy change will take effect from January 1st, 2025, and will make giving alms to beggars a criminal offence.

Aashish Singh, the District Collector, issued a statement saying anyone found giving alms to beggars will face legal action, with an FIR being registered on them.
The administration claimed that this move would provide a long-term solution to the eradication of begging.

The city’s move falls in line with the national initiative to dismantle the begging problem from the root in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, and Ahmedabad.
Many social media users became instantly divided upon the revelation of the news. One user said, “Indore is setting an example for other cities. This will help in making the city more organized and clean.”

Another expressed his reservations by commenting, “While the intention is good, criminalizing giving alms might not be the best approach. We need to focus on rehabilitation and providing employment opportunities.”
While both points of view hold their merit, whether this move will succeed in eradicating begging will only be revealed as it comes into effect from January 1st, 2025.
