Can you imagine your life without social media? If you can’t, you aren’t alone. You belong to the 60% of the global population, as a recent report reveals.
The report states that almost 5 billion people, or more than 60% of the global population, are active on social media. The numbers have increased by a margin of 3.7% from last year and are predicted to continue rising.
However, the statistics are not evenly distributed. The usage of social media is relatively rare in the eastern and central parts of Africa, where only 1 out of 11 people have the luxury to use it. In contrast, countries like India host more people who are comfortable using social media, with one out of three being active users.
As the number of users increased, the average time spent on social media followed the trend. On average, a normal person spends 2 hours and 26 minutes on social media, with Brazil topping the list at a concerning 3 hours and 49 minutes. In contrast, Japan spends less than one hour on social media.
Regarding social media platforms, there are some prominent apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. TikTok and WeChat also hold respectable places, along with Twitter and Telegram.
