One of India’s busiest airports, Chennai International Airport is refusing its passengers a ‘sweet spot’ in the luggage. Yes, you heard it right, the aviation giant made the news for not allowing 4 of its passengers to carry sweet boxes to Bangkok and the incident has taken next to no time to go viral on social platforms across the Internet.
Last week, the custom officers in the airport checked the bags of four of their international passengers who were headed for Bangkok and told them that they’re not allowed to take this on the flight. The customers expressed their grievances saying they were carrying these sweets due to the ongoing festive season, but the officers refused to pay any heed. The same passengers then took a domestic flight to Mumbai and from there they took off for Bangkok and as everyone would expect, they were not stopped for being a little ‘festive’ this time round.
Chennai Airport has recently become infamous for such incidents as it also stopped the relatives of Sri Lankan people to take sarees and night dresses with them back home as a part of their luggage. It is a common practice to take such clothes in bulk back with them as gifts from the festive season but now the customs have apparently had enough of it and are not allowing it to happen anymore. The passengers thus travel to Bangalore, Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram and from there, travel as international passengers. The passengers complained that the custom rules are the same for all the other international airports and that officials here are coming up with rules of their own. However, the Chennai Airport’s customs, upon being contacted, did clarify that they’re simply following the norms they’ve been handed by the government and have no clue regarding the standards followed by the other airports in the country.
