Jofra Archer had every reason to take it slow. Four years out of Test cricket. Serious back and elbow injuries. Endless rehab. But the moment he got the chance he sprinted in at Lord’s like he’d never left.
He bowled 39.2 overs, hit 87-90mph all day, took five wickets and after the match when asked about the rest of the series he didn’t hesitate.
“I don’t want to lose this series,” he said. “If they let me, I want to play the last two Tests.”
India after gifting away the Lord’s Test from a winning position are reportedly thinking about resting Jasprit Bumrah again.
He missed the second Test already. He’s played only two matches in this five match series.
And while nothing is confirmed, the signs point towards caution even when India are 2-1 down. And that’s what’s got fans asking what’s going on?
Why is Archer after four years out begging to play while Bumrah might be benched again? Is this about workload management or lack of urgency?
Why does it always feel like India is thinking about the next series more than the one they’re in?
Especially after what happened at Lord’s a game where India had every chance to win. They were ahead for large parts of the match. They had England under pressure. But somehow it slipped.
You’d expect India to come back with full force best XI, all guns blazing. But instead the message feels soft. Careful. Defensive.
And it gets more frustrating when you look across at Archer who despite everything is saying play me, I’ll fight.
It’s not just about fitness. It’s about mindset. Yes Bumrah has had injuries. Yes you want to protect him. But there are only two Tests left.
The series is alive. And this is Jasprit Bumrah India’s ace in Test cricket. If not now then when?
Archer’s return was not just about speed and wickets. It was about hunger. That desperation to win. That pride of playing Test cricket.
And that’s what Indian fans are desperate to see in their team right now. Because when you’re down in a series and you’ve just blown a Test what matters most isn’t rotation. It’s how badly you want to fix it. Archer clearly does. But does India?
