Aman Sehrawat

21-year-old Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat created history by winning a bronze medal in the men’s 57kg event last night. This is India’s sixth medal in this year’s Olympics.

Aman defeated Puerto Rico’s wrestler Cruz Darian Toi with a score of 5-13 in a nail-biting bronze medal match. This was Aman’s maiden Olympic stint and he won a medal in it.

However, it was not an easy road for him. Aman, just like Vinesh Phogat, was in the danger zone of getting disqualified due to being overweight.

According to the reports, Aman weighed 61.5 kgs after losing the semifinal match at 6.30 pm on August 8. In one night, he had to shed 4.5 kgs as the players are supposed to be under 57 kgs in this category.

Aman and his coaches had a herculean task ahead. However, they were ready for the challenge. Initially, Aman took a ‘mat session’ for 1.5 hours, where he practised standing wrestling under the supervision of his two senior coaches.

Later, he took a hot bath session for one hour, which helped him in getting a lot of sweat and cutting down some weight.

At around 12.30 am, Aman ran non-stop on a treadmill for one hour, resulting in more sweating. After the treadmill session, he took a half-an-hour break.

After the break, Aman took five-minute sauna sessions to shed more weight. After all this, he was still 900 grams overweight.

Later, he took a massage and did light jogging as per his coaches’ guidance. After that, Aman did 15-minute running sessions.

Finally, at 04.30 am, after 10 hours of intense workout, Aman weighed 56.9 kg, 100 grams less than the 57 kg mark. Throughout the process, Aman was given lukewarm water with lemon and honey, and a bit of coffee.

Aman also didn’t sleep at all and had to compete without any sleep. However, all his hard work paid off as he pulled off a magnanimous achievement.
