Breaking into Hollywood is often seen as a dream for Indian actors, but not everyone has chased the opportunity.
Over the years, several leading stars have turned down high-profile international projects due to scheduling conflicts, creative choices, or personal priorities.
Here are some of the biggest Hollywood films that almost had Indian stars in pivotal roles.
One of the latest additions to the list is Fahadh Faasil, who was reportedly offered the role of Ganesh in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming satire Digger, starring Tom Cruise.
The role eventually went to Riz Ahmed after Faasil declined the offer.
According to the actor, he was asked to spend four unpaid months in the United States working on his accent, a condition he chose not to accept.
Fahadh has also expressed that his primary focus remains Malayalam cinema rather than pursuing Hollywood opportunities.
Before making her Hollywood debut in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Deepika Padukone was reportedly offered a role in Fast & Furious 7.
However, she was busy filming Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and could not accommodate the international project’s schedule.
Christopher Nolan had reportedly considered Irrfan for the role of Dr. Mann, which was eventually played by Matt Damon.
The acclaimed actor could not take up the project because he was already committed to The Lunchbox and D-Day.
Years before becoming a familiar face in Hollywood through Quantico, Baywatch, Citadel, and several international films, Priyanka Chopra reportedly turned down Immortals.
She chose to honour her commitment to 7 Khoon Maaf.
Hrithik Roshan was offered a role opposite Steve Martin and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in The Pink Panther 2.
He reportedly decided against the project to focus on his Hindi film commitments. The character was later played by Andy García.
One of the most talked-about missed opportunities remains Slumdog Millionaire.
Shah Rukh Khan was reportedly approached for the role of quiz show host Prem Kumar but chose not to play the morally ambiguous character.
The role eventually went to Anil Kapoor and became one of the film’s memorable performances.
These stories show that turning down a Hollywood film does not necessarily mean missing out on success.
For many Indian actors, creative satisfaction, existing commitments, and long-term career choices have often taken precedence over international exposure.
Several of them went on to build remarkable careers on their own terms, proving that saying “no” can sometimes be just as defining as saying “yes.”
