Finally, after facing a 7-month battle with the CBFC board, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan directed by H Vinoth, was released in theatres today and is receiving mixed responses from audiences and critics.
Even though Vijay fans are happy with Jana Nayagan, claiming that irrespective of the plot and storyline, it is a proper fan-service film with mass moments to celebrate his one last dance, critics suggest that Jana Nayagan is nothing but an old, outdated film and are criticising Vijay for choosing it as his farewell movie.
However, despite the reviews, strong criticism has now been raised by social media users against the makers of Jana Nayagan, pointing to a particular scene in the film in which a rape scene is used to showcase the hero’s masculinity.
They note that while the whole Jana Nayagan film is based on the theme of women’s empowerment, contrastingly using a rape scene to showcase the actor’s masculinity proves the double standards of the makers.
Also, some people claim that the makers of Jana Nayagan deviated from the women empowerment concept halfway through the film and started preaching that women should equip themselves physically and be cautious, noting that men will be men. With this take, they feel that the entire women’s empowerment concept shown in the movie is shallow, as it still puts all the responsibility on women.
Surprisingly, all these criticisms were made mostly by audiences from other languages and these points question the intention of the makers of Jana Nayagan in making a film broadly centered on the concept of women’s empowerment.
Ultimately, some problematic scenes in Jana Nayagan are triggering severe trolling against the makers on social media and many people are sharing their responses to them.
