Suriya’s most anticipated movie, Kanguva, directed by Siruthai Siva, was finally released and has been receiving mostly negative reactions from both critics and audiences.
This movie was touted as a true pan-Indian film from Kollywood and was released on over 10,000 screens worldwide. The film was expected to be the first 1000-crore Tamil film.

Siruthai Siva started his career as a director with Gopichand, with films like Souryam and Sankham. After delivering a flop with Daruvu starring Ravi Teja, he shifted to Kollywood.
In Kollywood, he directed six films; four of these were with Ajith, including Veeram, Vedalam, Vivegam, and Viswasam.

His last movie, Annaatthe, starring Rajinikanth, was a major disaster. Despite this, he was allowed to direct a large-scale film with Suriya on a 350-crore budget — and that is Kanguva.
Unfortunately, he delivered another disaster.

Siva had a huge budget, a grand scale, opulent sets, and a fabulous actor like Suriya — yet Kanguva fell way short of expectations.
Siva thought of himself as though he were SS Rajamouli or Prashanth Neel. He did not realize that large-scale period films were not his cup of tea.
In Kanguva, the first 40 minutes were extremely cringeworthy. It was unbelievable that a film like Kanguva included such scenes. But if you look at Siva’s filmography, he is known for such farcical cringe content.
So was it Siva’s fault for overestimating his ability to handle a film like Kanguva, or was it Suriya’s misjudgment? Despite knowing Siva’s filmography, how could Suriya expect that he would do justice to this type of subject?
The audience genuinely wanted to like this film; there was a lot of goodwill around it due to Suriya. Siva just needed to deliver an entertaining spectacle — but, unfortunately, he missed the mark.
After Kanguva, it will be interesting to see if any top actor will choose Siruthai Siva as their next director. He will have to prove himself all over again.
Kanguva was his golden chance — one he couldn’t utilize!
