A Reddit post on r/HawaiianAirlines has revealed that all Alaska Airlines flights across the United States were suddenly grounded after a major IT outage disrupted operations nationwide. Both the airline and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the stoppage was due to a “temporary technical issue.”
Airline and FAA Confirm Ground Stop
In an alert shared online, Alaska Airlines stated, “We are aware of the issue and are actively looking into it. A temporary ground stop is in place. We apologize for the inconvenience.” The airline also advised passengers to check flight status updates before heading to airports. The FAA later described the event as a technology-related disruption but did not disclose the cause.
Passengers Report Chaos at Airports
Travellers on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) described confusion and delays at major airports including Seattle-Tacoma, Tucson, and Phoenix. Some passengers said they had been sitting on planes for over 45 minutes without updates, while others shared images of crowded terminals as they waited for news.
Horizon Air Also Affected
The IT issue reportedly impacted Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines’ regional subsidiary. This marks the second major technical failure for Alaska Airlines in 2025, following a July outage that grounded flights for three hours and disrupted thousands of journeys.
Investigation Underway
Alaska Airlines said its teams were working to restore normal operations and assured that passenger safety was never at risk. The airline later confirmed that a full investigation had begun to determine the cause of the system failure.
