There are thousands of Indian students in the U.S. every year who are conflicted between two paths—continue on STEM OPT or try their luck with the H1B lottery. Both seem like gates to the same place, but the journey through them is very different.
STEM OPT is temporary relief. It’s a 3-year work authorization for science, tech, engineering, and math students—but only for E-verified employers and only if the work is in the field of the degree.

H1B, on the other hand, offers the promise of stability but makes people sweat. It’s a luck-of-the-draw visa, not merit-based—and even the most qualified applicants can be rejected simply because their number wasn’t drawn.
The OPT stress is real. There’s the constant rush to obtain an H1B before time runs out.

Here’s where it gets tricky—STEM OPT gives flexibility in the early career phase, but it’s a countdown nonetheless. H1B gives the promise of a longer stay, a green card pathway, and job portability after a few years—but getting it is not in one’s hands.
There’s growing frustration among Indian skilled workers—stuck in cycles of anxiety, despite U.S. degrees and job offers in hand. The system was never designed to handle this many qualified applicants, and now it’s starting to break.

STEM OPT is a slow timer. H1B is roulette.
When both are uncertain, the one that gives more time, less dependence on random selection, and some peace of mind—wins, at least for now.
