Tharman Shanmugaratnam Singapore PresidentAfter Rishi Sunak, the world is going to have another leader of influence of Indian origin. Singapore had their first presidential elections since 2011 and Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been elected as the new president of the country. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong informed the media about the election results.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who is 66, won a huge majority of 70.4 percent of votes. He had served as the former deputy prime minister and finance minister of the state. He is going to replace Halimah Yacob who was the first female head of the state of Singapore.

The election results show the growing influence of people of Indian origin in world politics. The trend began with Kamala Harris acquiring the office of the Vice President of the United States in 2020. In October 2022, Rishi Sunak was appointed as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

This growing influence is there to stay as we see Vivek Ramaswamy, another Indian origin politician running for White House in the 2024 US elections. Currently in direct competition with the former president Donald Trump for the republican nomination, Vivek has already made a big reputation for himself. Even Canada is widely influenced by the presence of leaders like Jagmeet Singh. This growing trend is likely to cause a gradual shift in world politics which had previously been dominated by white males.
