The Department of Education has been ordered to apologize to a former Cronulla High School student after a teacher made racist remarks during a Year 12 business studies class.
The incident occurred when the teacher, James Anderson, allegedly mocked an Indian presenter in an educational YouTube video, describing all Indians as “Uber drivers and Deliveroo people.” The student of Indian descent, who was present in the class, filed a complaint with the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
The tribunal found the complaint of racial vilification substantiated and ordered the Department of Education to issue a written apology to the student.
The teacher received a disciplinary warning and training, while the Department emphasized its commitment to eliminating racial discrimination in public schools.
