The recent revelation of the ‘donkey’ flight carrying more than 300 Indians to the USA has exposed how big the problem of illegal immigration has become. In the last five years, there has been an astronomical increase in the number of Indians entering the US illegally. The work of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased because of this rapid growth.
According to a data release, the USA deported an Indian everyday in 2023. These people either didn’t have the proper documentation or entered the country illegally. When we compare this with the number of Indians caught on the US border trying to enter illegally, the number might seem small.
Between 2018 and 2023, a total of 5,477 Indians were deported from the US for entering illegally and staying. Between 2022 and 2023, more than 96,000 Indians were arrested at borders. This means that a large number of them are still in America awaiting their trial facing the risk of deportation.
The agents who are facilitating the travel of these people smuggle them through a series of road travels. These agents often have links with the narco-terrorist groups operating in South and Central America.
