More Indians Are Now Waving The Citizenship Off

Indians Waving Citizenship OffIndians are crossing the seas for a better education or lifestyle. However, when it comes to renouncing their citizenship, a notable statistic has emerged. Over the past five and a half years, less than 9 lakh citizens have relinquished their Indian citizenship in favor of other countries.

Even in the first half of this year, approximately 87,026 citizens chose to leave Indian citizenship. The statistics are not as concerning as those from the previous year.

Indians have occupied millions of job positions worldwide and constitute a significant portion of global students. Nonetheless, the act of renouncing citizenship raises certain concerns.

Last year saw the highest toll in 12 years, reaching 2,25,620 individuals. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had mentioned in a written reply to Lok Sabha last month that the number of Indian nationals exploring the global workplace has been significant over the last two decades.

Now, we have identified their destination. It’s not difficult to guess that the USA remains the top choice for citizens due to its employment opportunities and the pursuit of a better lifestyle. During that period, around 3.3 lakh Indians embraced US citizenship.

Canada stands as the second-largest destination for Indian individuals, with 1.62 lakh people choosing the nation. Australia also welcomes Indians warmly, with 1.32 lakh new citizens in the past five and a half years.

Australia is followed by the United Kingdom and Italy, which granted citizenship to 83,468 and 23,817 Indians, respectively.

The Government is implementing multiple initiatives to address these events. Minister Jaishankar had informed Parliament that the Government is aware of this trend and has introduced various measures focused on ‘Make in India’ to harness their talents within the country. Simultaneously, efforts have been made to promote skills and start-ups in order to fully exploit the benefits of the modern knowledge economy.
