An Indian-origin graduate in the US faced a shocking betrayal from an employer, leaving him jobless on his Optional Practical Training (OPT) permit.
Offer Turns into Betrayal
The student shared his experience on Reddit, saying he had cleared multiple interviews before securing a job at a better company. As an F-1 visa holder, he clearly explained that OPT doesn’t require sponsorship like H-1B. The company seemed fine with it and confirmed his start date for October 20.
Offer Withdrawn Without Warning
After serving his notice period until October 17, everything changed. When HR reviewed his documents, the People Ops manager admitted she had never onboarded an OPT student and needed legal advice. A few days later, the student got an email saying the job offer was rescinded. The company stopped responding altogether.
Left Jobless Overnight
Having already quit his old job, the graduate was left stranded. Attempts to rejoin his previous company failed. His trust in the new employer cost him his job, income, and stability all within days.
A Growing Pattern
Many others in the Reddit thread shared similar stories. Some lost opportunities at the final interview, while others were rejected outright due to their visa status. For international students, OPT now feels like a risky gamble.
Uncertain Future for International Graduates
With strict immigration policies under Trump’s leadership still affecting company attitudes, fresh graduates continue to face an uncertain job market. Many are left questioning whether the American dream is still worth chasing.
