Patel Shippers, an Indian grocery firm in the US is in the news. Patel Shippers offers a wide range of grocery items that cater to the needs of Indians living in the US.
However, recent developments have cast a shadow on the company’s reputation. The US Department of Labor revealed that Patel Shippers failed to pay proper wages to its workers. This led to the recovery of over $71,047 in back wages and liquidated damages.
The company, which supplies fruits and vegetables from India and Asia to grocery stores across ten US states, was found to have paid only straight-time rates for all hours worked, even for hours exceeding 40 in a workweek.
Additionally, inaccurate record-keeping resulted in three workers being paid less than the federal minimum wage, violating the Fair Labor Standards Act.
It’s odd to see a grocery brand trying to save money by not treating hardworking employees fairly.
Patel Shippers LLC delivers fruit and vegetables to grocery stores in Miami, Sunrise and West Palm Beach. The company also supplies grocers in Arizona, California, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. Now they’re in the news, getting fined by the U.S. Department of Labor.
