
A growing number of stories are emerging of employers breaking promises to sponsor H1B visas, and this latest incident adds to the trend.
An OPT candidate recently expressed their disappointment after a state court employer backed out on their commitment to sponsor his H1B visa. Prior to accepting the job offer, they received an email from HR confirming the sponsorship, which played a significant role in their decision to turn down another opportunity.

However, after starting the job and following up with HR about the sponsorship in November 2024, they received a response just two days ago—no sponsorship due to high costs.
Despite their attempts to negotiate, HR remained firm in their decision. Now, the worker is faced with the dilemma of either continuing to advocate for what was promised or seeking new opportunities.

It’s difficult not to feel let down when an employer goes back on their word, especially after making significant life choices based on that assurance. When an employer gives a written commitment and then backs out without hesitation, it’s more than a professional setback—it’s a personal blow.
The time, effort, and energy spent on relocating, declining other offers, and trusting a promise feel wasted. It’s easy to feel powerless like the system isn’t built to protect employees, particularly when dealing with large companies where HR may not fully grasp the seriousness of such commitments.

The uncertainty surrounding visa issues can complicate matters even further, especially when things don’t unfold as expected.
