A recent error by USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) has disrupted the OPT timeline of a fresh graduate. The mistake cost the student more than a month of valuable job search time.
OPT Dates Misaligned
The student graduated on May 9, 2025, and requested an OPT start date of July 8, 2025. However, when USCIS approved the permit on August 13, the physical document wrongly showed July 10, 2025, as the start date. This reduced the available unemployment days by over 30.
Why This Matters
OPT holders are allowed a maximum of 90 days of unemployment during their one-year period. Because of the error, this student now has less than 60 days to secure another job if laid off. Every week lost is critical in the US job market.
Impact on International Students
Delays in USCIS processing and mailing often turn into unpaid waiting periods for international students and NRIs. For many, even small mistakes can affect career opportunities and visa timelines.
Lack of Support from Schools
The student said that their school offered little help, providing only vague guidance. For someone balancing immigration rules and career stress, this lack of support feels like abandonment at the worst possible time.
A Call for Change
This case highlights how a single incorrect date can derail future plans. International students deserve faster processing, clearer answers, and accountability from both USCIS and universities.
