US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has sent a strong warning by highlighting the case of an Indian national convicted of visa fraud.
Fake Crimes for U Visas
Rambhai Patel, 37, from New York, staged fake armed robberies in convenience stores and restaurants across several states. His plan was to trick his way into U visas. Participants paid him up to $20,000 each to pose as victims, while store owners earned money for hosting these staged crimes.
What Are U Visas
For those unaware, U visas are given to victims of specific crimes. The programme is designed to encourage them to assist law enforcement during investigations.
Sentence and Deportation
Rambhai pleaded guilty in May and was sentenced last month to 20 months and 8 days in prison. He must also forfeit $850,000 and will be deported after release. His co-conspirator, Balwinder Singh, is awaiting sentencing later this month.
USCIS Issues a Warning
Although the arrest took place weeks ago, the USCIS account on X revived the case this week. The agency posted, “Immigration fraud is not a victimless crime. It robs our nation’s lawful immigration system of valuable benefits intended for those who deserve and earn them.”
Impact on Community
The Indian community online has criticised Rambhai’s actions, supporting the authorities’ stance. Such cases harm genuine applicants and damage the credibility of the wider Indian diaspora. Attorneys now warn this could make the U visa programme stricter and place more scrutiny on real victims seeking visas.
