The dream of studying abroad for many Indians is becoming difficult every day and now this problem is not only restricted to the US.
Starting from 2026, the US has announced a new $250 “Visa Integrity Fee” on nearly all visa types, including the F‑1 student visa. That’s more than twice the regular $185 application fee, bringing the total to $435 (nearly ₹38,000) just to apply.
Other non-immigrant visa categories like B-1/B-2 visitor visas, and H-1B work visas will also be hit with this integrity fee and it will increase every year with inflation.
However, student visas draw special attention because there is a high chance that even after paying the fees, you may not receive your F-1 visa.
Recently, Indian students have witnessed increasing hurdles to their American dream. Interview slots have vanished across consulates for nearly a month, triggering panic.
Worse, students are now forced to hand over their entire social media history, every account, every post, for background checks. Thus, even a single meme or sarcastic comment against Trump or his policies can now delay or derail your visa.
At this time the students might turn to alternatives but maybe not to Australia. The Pacific country has also raised its visa fee to a staggering AUD 2,000 (nearly ₹1.13 lakhs), only leaving European options for Indian applicants.
Recently, Germany has already seen a rising influx of Indian youth as a result of these stricter curbs in the US. The situation feels like a global shutdown on international students, who are limited to only a few options.
