Big Stars, Zero Impact: Huge Flop On OTT?

Manorathangal Series

MT Vasudevan Nair, a legendary figure in Malayalam literature, has made a profound impact on the language, making it accessible and engaging for generations of Malayalis.

His writing, known for its simplicity, poetry, and wit, has captivated audiences across ages and interests.

To honor his legacy, an anthology film called Manorathangal (Mindscapes) was created, featuring nine of his stories to celebrate his nine decades of life.

The film, directed by renowned makers like Priyadarshan and Santosh Sivan, attempts to bring back the charm of MT’s stories. The anthology, however, faces mixed reactions.

Some adaptations successfully capture the essence of MT’s work, while others fall short, struggling with outdated settings and forced nostalgia.

For instance, Shilalikhitam, the opening film, features Biju Menon as a middle-aged man visiting his ancestral home, but its attempt to recreate an earlier era feels artificial due to the excessive use of melodramatic music and mismatched settings.

Kamala Haasan adds a unique touch by introducing each film in the anthology, discussing MT’s autobiographical elements and relationships.

Notable actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal also contribute, with Mammootty appearing in a film based on MT’s Sri Lankan stories, and Mohanlal taking on an ancient role. However, some adaptations, such as Olavum Theeravum, feel outdated.

The standout adaptation is Mahesh Narayanan’s Sherlock, featuring Fahadh Faasil and Nadiya Moidu. Its charming and witty portrayal of an expat’s life stands out.

Shyamaprasad’s Kazhcha, starring Parvathy Thiruvothu, portrays a woman’s struggle for independence in a restrictive society. The anthology also includes interesting actor pairings, like Fahadh and Nadiya, and Asif Ali with Madhoo.

Despite featuring major stars like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan, and Fahadh Faasil, the series has barely made a ripple. There’s no discussion about it on social media, almost as if the series is non-existent.

Today’s viewers demand compelling, engaging narratives that hold their interest from beginning to end. Unfortunately, Manorathangal is often dead slow and lacks excitement, even for an OTT audience.

While the anthology pays a respectable tribute to MT Vasudevan Nair’s significant influence on Malayalam cinema, it falls short as a web series. It doesn’t quite resonate with modern viewers, offering little to captivate today’s audience.
