Dulquer Salmaan’s Kaantha, directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, was released in theatres on November 14th. The film received mixed responses from both audiences and critics.
Due to this reception, Kaantha ended its theatrical run with an average status. After a four-week OTT window, the film started streaming on Netflix on December 12th.
Kaantha is available in five languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. Currently, the film is trending at the number one position on Netflix in India.
Despite this achievement, there is surprisingly very little buzz around its digital performance. Only a small number of viewers are discussing the film or sharing opinions on social media platforms.
Most of the online discussions focus mainly on Dulquer Salmaan’s acting. Viewers have praised his performance, but many feel the film itself did not meet expectations and remained average.
Some industry trackers have gone a step further and labelled the film a failure in both its theatrical and OTT runs. They pointed out that Kaantha was expected to become a classic before release.
However, negative reviews from day one affected its momentum. Based on this, they believe the film turned out to be a complete misfire.
Several voices feel Dulquer Salmaan should be more selective with scripts in the future. At the same time, it remains to be seen how Kaantha performs on OTT in the coming days.
There is still a possibility that the film could be rediscovered later as an underrated gem.
