Sudip Sharma OTT CensorshipNetflix’s latest Indian crime drama, “Kohrra,” has taken audiences by storm. Showrunner Sudip Sharma, known for his work on the critically acclaimed “Paatal Lok,” presents an atmospheric murder mystery that delves into the heart of contemporary Punjab, India.

“Punjab has a culture of its own, a religion and politics of its own, and a language of its own,” explains Sharma, who was drawn to the project’s nuanced portrayal of the region. He notes how India’s diverse regions each have their own distinct subcultures, adding depth to the storytelling.

However, navigating the changing landscape of Indian streaming platforms has been a challenge. Sharma reveals that censorship restrictions make it “difficult to tell larger socio-political stories” on Indian platforms. Consequently, “Kohrra” weaves societal themes into family dynamics to avoid censorship issues while still commenting on Indian society.

Sharma’s emphasis on character development sets “Kohrra” apart from generic crime dramas, as it explores the intricacies of its characters’ lives and motivations. His experience in project management has also helped him excel as a showrunner, and he emphasizes the need to train more writers in this role to enhance the quality of content in India.

Looking to the future, Sharma aims to develop shows that appeal to international audiences, believing that India can aspire to create content with global resonance. As the streaming industry in India evolves, he envisions reaching new heights and producing series that captivate audiences worldwide.
