Ricky Dene Gervais, the English comedian actor, is familiar with controversies and headlines. This time it is because of Gervais’ latest ‘Armageddon’, a stand-up special released on Netflix.
It is not the first time Gervais has collaborated with Netflix. He was the protagonist of the hit comedy-drama show, After Life, for the streaming giant and another stand-up special, Ricky Gervais: SuperNature.
But, Netflix did not give the required attention to its star creator that he deserved. It did not give any attention. Netflix did not put any effort into promoting Armageddon, rather it chose to promote movies like “Rebel Moon”.
Armageddon had been making headlines even before it was released due to the teaser where Gervais talked about his way of approaching messages for terminally ill children who ask for him.
It has been Netflix’s strategy to not back the creators who need it but those who bring in more money. Gervais has enough following of his own to not need help from Netflix to give a hit, but Netflix rarely stands up for its shows that spark controversy even a little. Until, of course, it supports some very popular propaganda of the last few decades.
Netflix prides itself on allowing diversity and welcoming all sorts of creators, but if it doesn’t give every show equal treatment before release then the game is already rigged in the favour of the rich and propagandists.
