True crime series often pull you in because they explore the darker sides of human psychology. Netflix’s The Monster of Florence does the same, beautifully shot, but emotionally distant. It’s haunting to watch, yet its storytelling doesn’t always connect.
The show revisits Italy’s notorious unsolved murders that took place between 1968 and 1985. It tries to recreate the fear and social bias of that period. Haricharan Pudipeddi described it as a Zodiac-style mystery set against Italy’s turbulent gender politics.
Visually, the show is stunning. The cinematography uses shadows and muted light to build tension, keeping you uneasy throughout. Every frame feels deliberate, drawing you into a world where suspense and dread dominate every moment.
Still, many viewers on IMDb and social media called the show confusing and uneven. They felt the focus on broken relationships distracted from the main investigation. The disjointed timeline often left viewers unsure of where the story was heading.
Yet some appreciated that same non-linear structure. They saw it as a bold artistic choice meant to mirror the chaos of real-life mystery. While The Monster of Florence lacks procedural clarity, it succeeds in showing how evil often hides where answers never come.
#TheMonsterOfFlorence: A serial-killer show that doesn’t quite get into the nuts and bolts of the investigation (based on a chilling true story) but still manages to leave you with a lot of intrigue. It is very atmospheric, especially the way it’s shot. Imagine the Zodiac killer… pic.twitter.com/qhhWo3i77J

What a very solid yet tough to watch series #ThemonsterOfFlorence. Top tier, but I hate that it’s very slow.
