One Film That Destroyed OTT Market

OTT Market

Winning the trust of audiences takes years of hard work, meticulous planning, and a sprinkle of good luck. Yet, it can all come crashing down with just one poor film.

The Kannada film industry, which had long been dismissed as a hub of remakes, finally made a mark with the success of KGF and Kantara. These films helped the industry gain respect and recognition on a national scale.

However, the 2023 release Kabzaa, featuring Upendra and Sudeepa, has pushed the industry back to square one. The film’s poor reception led to a significant loss of trust among pan-India audiences, causing OTT platforms to avoid acquiring Kannada films.

Recently, a promising Kannada film, Hadinelentu/Seventeeners, faced a lack of interest from OTT platforms and was ultimately released on YouTube.

This highlights a troubling trend: despite having strong content, Kannada films struggle to find a platform due to the industry’s diminished bargaining power.

Rishab Shetty recently voiced his frustration, stating that OTT platforms are now hesitant to invest in Kannada films based on the failure of a single commercial flop, Kabzaa.

He expressed concern over the industry’s diminished access to these platforms, pointing out that a single disaster shouldn’t define the market for an entire film industry.

The ripple effect of Kabzaa’s failure has been significant, as it has overshadowed the goodwill earned by earlier blockbusters like KGF and Kantara.
