The first season of Rana Naidu was the biggest talk of the town for multiple reasons. For some, it was one of the boldest shows they had ever watched, with shocking performances from some of their favourite actors. For others, the shock factor was too much, turning it into a controversial take.
The vulgar language, bold scenes, and raw characters, the very reasons the show gained popularity, were also the reasons it faced backlash.
While many appreciated the exceptional performances and character arcs, others focused only on the vulgar aspects.
When the second season of the show was released, fans were disappointed to see that the very elements they had loved were toned down to create something more palatable for a mass audience, ultimately making the show lose its charm.
They argued that if it were a theatrical release, it would make sense for the makers to tone things down. But since it’s a digital release, where viewers have the choice to watch or not, there was no real reason for the change.
This shift in tone significantly affected both the viewing experience and the characters.
In a recent interview, the star of the show, Rana Daggubati, acknowledged that they had received a lot of backlash for the show’s tone. However, he added that when something is done for the first time, backlash is inevitable, and he’s ready to take that blow to pave the way for future shows like this.
What’s surprising is that films with equally vulgar content often get approved for theatrical release, while a bold show like this faced backlash even as a digital release.
The raw tone of the show helped the actors showcase their full range and talent. Toning it down is like dulling the impact it was meant to have.
The show may have lost a portion of its audience due to its explicit style, but now, by softening it, it might have alienated even the loyal fanbase that embraced the boldness of the first season.
