70 Cr BO Disaster on Netflix: Will OTT Viewers Care

Thammudu Netflix Release

These days, even big budget films are landing on OTT platforms within just a few weeks of their theatrical release. This trend has quickly become the new norm.

Producers often lock digital deals in advance, ensuring a second life for their films regardless of box office performance. One such film now heading to streaming is Thammudu, which turned out to be one of the season’s biggest disappointments.

Released on July 4th with almost no expectations, Thammudu starred Nithiin in the lead role, alongside Varsha Bollamma and Saptami Gowda. Directed by Sriram Venu, the film borrowed its title from Pawan Kalyan’s iconic hit, but even that failed to generate any notable prerelease buzz.

As expected, the final product fell flat both critically and commercially. Despite a massive budget of Rs. 70 crores, the film could not even collect a Rs. 2 crore theatrical share, marking it as a major box office disaster.

Now, the film is set to try its luck on Netflix. The platform has acquired its streaming rights, and Thammudu will be available from August 1st in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada. It is a second chance for the film to reach viewers who skipped it in theatres.

The story revolves around a deadly factory blast in Visakhapatnam, orchestrated by a man named Azarwal as part of an insurance scam. Veteran actress Laya plays Jhansi, who leads the investigation into the incident.

When she refuses to cover up the truth, her family becomes a target. Nithiin plays Jai, a mysterious figure who steps in to protect her and bring the culprits to justice.

The film failed to connect with cinema audiences, and there is little hope that its OTT debut will turn things around. Still, for fans of Nithiin or those curious about the plot, Thammudu may find a few takers in the OTT space.
