Cannes 2025 Bollywood Costume Circus

The Cannes Film Festival, once considered the epitome of cinematic excellence, is now trending for reasons far away from cinema—thanks to Bollywood and its extended company.

With each passing year it is difficult to guess whether Cannes is still a film festival or just a free-for-all red carpet event for anyone with a gown and a PR contact.

While several of Bollywood’s seasoned actors and filmmakers attended the event with film-related agendas, several lesser-known influencers and rising celebrities also strutted down the red carpet, confusing many for the reason of their presence.

Social media users also didn’t hold back from commenting on this; one video surfaced on the internet where a girl compared Cannes to the Kumbh Mela, where anyone can now take a dip at this glittered-up fashion gala.

Others pointed out how Cannes was once only graced by those who had contributed significantly to cinema—actors, directors, and writers whose work had earned them that place—citing Aishwarya Rai as an example.

Today it seems influencers and celebrities view this event as a fashion photoshoot.

Apart from that, these celebrities also overshadow people who’ve actually made it to the festival on merit.

It’s hardly ever that we hear discussions about good films that were screened or what new ideas were shared and discussed at an event where all the best of the world gather.

It is true that fashion has always been a part of Cannes, but when cinema takes a backseat, the whole thing starts to lose its meaning.

Maybe it is time to rethink what we show up with instead of what we show up in.
