Recently, the makers of Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film under the direction of SU Arun Kumar announced the title of the film as Sandiyar. This title has now sparked a major political controversy.
As everyone knows, Kamal Haasan’s Virumaandi, released in 2004 was initially titled Sandiyar. However, because it triggered a lot of caste-related controversy at the time, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa intervened and changed the title of the film to Virumaandi to ensure its smooth release.
Now, it seems like history is repeating itself once again for Kamal Haasan. The political party Puthiya Tamilagam, led by K Krishnasamy, which strongly opposed Kamal Haasan for using the title Sandiyar back then, claiming that it glorifies dominant caste groups and risks triggering caste-based violence has once again raised its voice against the actor, noting that he is repeating the same mistake.
In a recent press conference, the leader of Puthiya Tamilagam issued a warning that the shooting of Sandiyar will not be allowed to happen and the film will not be released in theatres.
This controversy has greatly upset Kamal Haasan’s fans. They have started commenting on social media that Puthiya Tamilagam is deliberately turning the title into a huge issue, questioning how they can target the film solely for its title without even knowing its content.
Hence, it remains to be seen whether this title issue will turn into an even larger controversy and whether Kamal Haasan will fight for his title or change it to ensure the film’s smooth release.
