After a long break from headlines, Aamir Khan is back in the news not for his performance, but for a growing controversy around his upcoming directorial film, Lahore 1947.
The film has reportedly hit a roadblock over its title, and the makers are divided. After several release delays, reports suggest Lahore 1947 might release under a new name.
The possible title change is linked to the current political climate and rising tension between India and its neighbouring country. Some argue that an Indian film shouldn’t carry the name of a Pakistani city.
However, director Rajkumar Santoshi has strongly opposed the idea. He called it “a form of appeasement” and said he is totally against changing the title. While he admitted the final decision rests with producer Aamir Khan, Santoshi made it clear he doesn’t support the move.
Santoshi described Lahore 1947 as a dream project he has cherished for nearly 20 years. He believes altering the title would weaken the film’s message and emotional depth.
The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya O Jamyai Nai and stars Sunny Deol and Shabana Azmi in lead roles. The director also said Sunny was “destined” for this part.
Fans have reacted sharply online, calling the demand for a title change unnecessary. Many pointed out that India plays cricket with Pakistan, yet a film’s name is facing objections for simply mentioning a city.
Now, the final call lies with Aamir Khan. Whether he changes the title or supports his director’s vision, fans are waiting to see how this unfolds.
