In Bollywood, the numbers behind a film become as much a part of the story as the movie itself.
With big releases, budget figures are thrown around in the media, sometimes to inflate expectations and sometimes to deflate them.
This dance of numbers is not just about accounting – it’s about perception and hype. Housefull 5 is a classic example of this.
Initially, reports said the film was being made on a whopping ₹375 crore, making it India’s most expensive comedy and generating a lot of buzz. But as advance bookings opened to an average response, the narrative changed.
Now, sources close to the production are saying the budget is ₹225 crore (excluding prints and advertising). This change in reported budget is probably a clever move by the makers to manage expectations and reduce the pressure on the film’s box office.
When pre-release excitement doesn’t match the scale of investment, producers often highlight a lower budget to make the film’s business look better.
Whatever the confusion, there’s no denying that Housefull 5 is Akshay Kumar’s costliest film till date and a big risk for producer Sajid Nadiadwala given the genre and the challenge of shooting on a cruise with a big star cast.
Ultimately, whether the budget is ₹225 crore or ₹375 crore, the film’s success will depend on audience acceptance and its box office run – not just the numbers being discussed in trade circles.
