AR Murugadoss’ film Darbar, which was released in 2020, starring Rajinikanth in the lead, turned out to be a box office debacle.
In an interview, the director spoke about why the film failed.
The acclaimed director has made several hit films with big-ticket stars, including Dheena (starring Ajith), Ghajini (starring Suriya), Stalin (starring Chiranjeevi), and Thuppakki (starring Vijay).
However, after a string of successes, Murugadoss faced failure with Darbar in 2020. Despite the immense hype surrounding the film, it turned out to be a damp squib at the box office.
In the interview, he revealed that strict time constraints forced him to rush the production. The film was scheduled for a Pongal release, which limited the time he had to complete it.
Along with that, Rajnikanth was also planning to switch to politics right after the film, and he had a tight schedule that Murugadoss had to work around.
A similar situation arose with Sikandar, where he had to rush through the filmmaking process to meet its big Eid release deadline.
The hurried execution was evident in both films, and their box office fate turned out to be the sameâ two disasters despite featuring two superstars.
Had the director not overestimated himself and taken more time, Sikandar might have had a better outcome than it does now.
