Legal Storm: Durga Scene Sparks Communal Hatred?

The Bengal Files teaser backlash

Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming film The Bengal Files has found itself at the center of a major controversy just weeks before its theatrical release. Multiple FIRs have been filed against Agnihotri, along with actress Pallavi Joshi and producer Abhishek Agarwal, by members of West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress. The trigger? A teaser clip showing a burning idol of Goddess Durga, which the party claims promotes communal hatred.

The police reports allege that the scene insults the cultural sentiments of Bengal and could disturb communal harmony. With tensions rising, the makers of the film—currently on a U.S. promotional tour scheduled to end on August 10, 2025, in Houston—have yet to comment on the unfolding legal trouble.

Films like The Bengal Files often face backlash for their bold content. While raising awareness isn’t inherently wrong, it’s essential to recognize sensitive boundaries. Agnihotri, known for tackling controversial subjects, seems unfazed by the growing heat, but this time the criticism is intense and immediate.

Interestingly, the film hasn’t generated much buzz so far, and in a market where biopics and message-driven stories have recently struggled, this controversy might ironically work in its favor. However, it’s uncertain whether the public outrage will translate into greater audience turnout.

At this point, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) holds the key. It may demand edits to the controversial visuals or could potentially delay the release depending on its assessment. Whether the issue is resolved quietly or escalates further remains to be seen in the days leading up to release.
